Environmental Health Officer - On-Site Sewage Management

About the role
This is a permanent, Part-Time position working 28 hours per week. This position is located at the Nowra Administration Building.

The focus of this position is to provide for the protection, promotion and improvement of the environment and public health and safety of the community by:

  • providing professional advice, delivering education and guidance;
  • administer and enforce the Acts and Regulations under various legislation and Council policies; and
  • working co-operatively with other Council divisions and state agencies to achieve improved environmental and public health outcomes.

The advertised salary is based on the grade of the position, comprising of 4 steps within the range shown. The starting salary is at Step 1 within the grade. Progression through the salary steps shall be based upon the achievement of performance objectives relating to the position.

Duties
Reporting directly to the Senior Environmental Health Officer, you will be responsible for:- 

  • Assessing and determining applications for approval to operate existing sewage management facilities.
  • Inspection and assessment of sewage management facilities on domestic and commercial premises.
  • Investigation and enforcement activities for compliance with relevant environmental legislation such as the Protection of the Environment Operations Act and Regulations, e.g. for air, noise, water pollution and waste dumping matters;
  • Investigate and respond to neighbourhood complaints such as noise, air pollution, odours, overgrown vegetation, hoarding and squalor, management of noise from aviaries & poultry.
  • Implement the NSW food legislation through compliance inspection and auditing, food handler education and enforcement of retail premises and temporary and mobile food premises;
  • Undertake noise assessments of activities as required, including using sound level meters and provide reports in accordance with Environmental Protection Authority’s noise assessment criteria;

Skills & Experience
To be successful in the position, you will possess:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health) or equivalent
    • Current NSW WorkCover Construction Induction Certificate
    • Current Class C Driver’s Licence

    This is a grade range position, therefore in accordance with qualifications, accreditation, experience and demonstrated skills, the prospective employee will be assessed as either Grade 9, 10 or 11.
    Grade 9 – $61,932 – $72,096  (pro-rata)
    Grade 10 - $68,401 - $78,569  (pro-rata)
    Grade 11 – $74,874 - $85,037  (pro-rata)
