About the role
Shoalhaven City Council is seeking a Community Development Cadet – Aboriginal. This position provides for a person with the willingness and ability, or in the process of completing a relevant qualification (Diploma level or above) in Social Science, Welfare, Community Development/Community Services, Social Work, Aboriginal Studies or Social Planning. The position presents an opportunity for practical experience in Community Development whilst having time off to complete your course of study.
Duties
Working closely with Community Development Officer – Aboriginal and reporting directly to the Senior Community Development Officer the focus of this position is to:
Assist the Community Development Officer – Aboriginal:
• in the delivery of activities that work towards addressing the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Shoalhaven Local Government Area (LGA)
• in liaising and providing advice to stakeholders within Council and with the community on Aboriginal protocols.
• undertaking Community Development projects in line with Council’s Community Strategic Plan and Delivery Plan
This is a designated Aboriginal position as authorised by Shoalhaven City Council’s EEO Management Plan and Aboriginal Employment Strategy in accordance with Part 9A of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
Skills & Experience
To be successful in the position, you will be/ possess:
• Current enrolment or intention to enroll in a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following disciplines: Social Science, Welfare, Community Development/Community Services, Social Work, Aboriginal Studies, Social Planning/Regional Panning or other related fields
• Class C Drivers Licence
• An understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• An ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people
• Some experience working (including voluntary) with Aboriginal communities.
This position requires a current NSW Working with Children Check. Applicants are required to apply and pay for this check if not already obtained.
Council requires applicants for this position to undergo a National Criminal History Check during the recruitment process. This check will be at the expense of Council.
